Severe thunderstorm warning issued for GTR area

The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the following counties: Clay, Lowndes, and Oktibbeha until 3 p.m.

This includes West Point, Starkville, Columbus, and Columbus Air Force Base.

At 2:12 p.m., National Weather Service meteorologists detected a severe thunderstorm capable of producing nickel-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. This storm was located near West Point, moving east at 20 mph.

High winds can bring down trees and large limbs resulting in serious injury or property damage. Exercise extreme caution when outdoors during such strong winds and be especially aware of older trees.

In addition to large hail and damaging winds, continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately! Lightning is one of nature's number one killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
