NeMiss: Flash flood watch in effect until Thursday evening

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a flash flood watch from 7 p.m. until Thursday evening for the following Mississippi counties: Alcorn, Benton, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Coahoma, Desoto, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Marshall, Monroe, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union and Yalobusha.

Widespread heavy rainfall of 2 to 4 inches with locally heavier amounts above 5 inches can be expected over the warning area tonight through Thursday afternoon as numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop and move over the same areas.

Flash flooding is likely as some rain will be very heavy and produce 1 to 3 inches of rainfall per hour. Also, training of showers and thunderstorms over a given area in the watch area will enhance rainfall amounts and surface runoff on already-moist ground.

A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor KFFO-TV forecasts and be prepared to take action, should flash flood warnings be issued.
