Within hours of staging a 200-person protest against funding shortfalls by the state College Board, Delta State University's student newspaper editor is encouraging students to keep speaking out to state legislators through e-mail.

Many students walked out of their 10 a.m. classes to attend the Tuesday protest, carrying signs reading "SAVE OUR SCHOOL" and "STOP BUDGET CUTS."

The students became upset after learning a new state College Board funding formula would take more than $175,000 from Delta State and give the University of Mississippi almost $2 million next year. If enrollment and state funding numbers remained unchanged for six years, Ole Miss would eventually pocket $10.9 million, while Delta State's budget would lose $5.3 million.

Other universities, including Alcorn State, Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi Valley State and the University of Southern Mississippi each will lose between $10,000 and $136,000. Mississippi Tech will not be affected.

"The board did not make this decision lightly," incoming College Board president Amy Whitten said. We've been studying the inequality and watching the inequality grow over the last five or six years."

Whitten said Delta State has probably benefitted by well over $1 million over the last several years.

Tuition increases may be next on the College Board's agenda during its May meeting.
